Iloilo is known to have a higher level of appreciation of built heritage, compared to other cities in the Philippines. The community and the government understand the importance of the preservation of old structures (ancestral houses, churches, civic buildings) as this also means preserving the stories behind and about it, for future generations to learn from. This attitude also extends to nature and urban planning as exemplified by the significant pedestrianization of the city through its bike lanes, walkways, and river promenades.
The project references to a lot of elements from the built heritage (such as vantanillas, balustrades, balcons, azoteas – from the Bahay na Bato), marries it with the identity of the developer, as well as the Filipino cultural practices.
Once built, the hope is that though the project is a contemporary addition to the built environment, by referencing, interpreting, and showcasing past heritage, that it too could eventually be part of the story of IloIlo.
